Methodology & Principles

About Coast FIRE Calculator & Our Math

We built Coast FIRE Calculator to replace spammy, unverified financial calculators with an honest, privacy-first, mathematically transparent tool for the FIRE community.

Our Mission

The Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) movement is filled with nuance, but search results for financial calculators have become increasingly polluted with content-farm clones, intrusive popups, and forced email signups. Coast FIRE Calculator was founded on three simple principles:

  • No signup, no tracking: All simulations execute 100% inside your browser's JavaScript engine. Your personal net worth and contributions never touch a server.
  • Mathematical transparency: We expose every formula, rate calculation, and assumption upfront so you can hand-verify your own numbers.
  • Conservative honesty: We don't sugarcoat projections. If your current monthly savings leave a shortfall, our tool clearly displays the gap rather than giving a false sense of security.

The Compounding Model

Coast FIRE is reached when your current invested balance will compound to your full retirement target by your target retirement age without another cent of future contributions. Here is the exact three-stage logic our calculator uses:

1. Full FI Target = Annual Spending in Retirement ÷ Safe Withdrawal Rate
2. Coast Number (Today) = Full FI Target ÷ (1 + Real Annual Return) ^ Years to Retirement
3. Coast Age = Exact age when Balance(t) compounded with monthly contributions clears the required Coast Number at time t

Why Real (Inflation-Adjusted) Returns Matter

Many legacy calculators ask for a nominal return (e.g., 10%) and then produce multimillion-dollar results that mislead savers about their actual purchasing power 20 or 30 years into the future.

Coast FIRE Calculator works entirely in today's purchasing power. By subtracting estimated inflation from nominal returns (for instance, assuming a 6.0% real return based on historical 9.5% US market growth minus 3.5% inflation), every dollar figure you see reflects what that money buys in current goods and services.

Effective Monthly Compounding: Rather than using a crude annual approximation, our simulation advances month-by-month using the effective monthly rate r_m = (1 + r)^(1/12) - 1. This accurately reflects continuous investment compounding and timing of monthly paycheck contributions.

Addressing Competitor Gaps

Before launching Coast FIRE Calculator, our engineering team evaluated existing ranking pages. We identified recurring flaws across legacy tools:

  • No comparison across FIRE archetypes: Savers often confuse Coast FIRE with Barista FIRE or Lean FIRE. Coast FIRE Calculator provides an interactive comparison matrix to help you choose the right path.
  • Static worked examples: Competitor tools show arbitrary static numbers. Coast FIRE Calculator generates a dynamic, personalized mathematical breakdown that updates in real time with your specific inputs.
  • Missing visual progress: Instead of raw number blocks, Coast FIRE Calculator renders an interactive SVG arc meter and a high-DPI canvas glide-path chart showing your portfolio trajectory over time.

Editorial & Verification Standards

All formulas, code routines, and copy on Coast FIRE Calculator are maintained and regularly audited by our Financial Engineering Team. We run automated verification suites against standardized test cases (including already-achieved milestones, mid-career trajectories, and shortfall scenarios) to ensure our code remains mathematically bulletproof.

Planning Estimate Notice: While our formulas reflect standard financial economics, our tools are provided for educational and illustrative purposes. See our Financial Disclaimer for details.
