1. Simplified Compounding Assumptions
Real-world financial markets are volatile, non-linear, and uncertain. Coast FIRE Calculator utilizes a simplified deterministic compounding model that assumes a constant, smoothed real rate of return (e.g., 6.0% annually). In reality:
- Sequence of Returns Risk: Market downturns occurring early in your accumulation or withdrawal phases can dramatically alter your final portfolio balance, even if average historical returns are met over a 30-year span.
- Non-Guaranteed Growth: Past investment returns of equity indices (such as the S&P 500 or Total Stock Market Index) are not predictive of future performance.
- Inflation Volatility: Inflation fluctuates significantly from year to year, altering the real purchasing power of your annual retirement budget.
2. Exclusions & Known Model Gaps
To preserve ease of use and client-side simplicity, this version of our Coast FIRE calculator intentionally omits several variables. Savers should be aware that:
- Social Security and Pensions are excluded: Our calculator models investment portfolios alone. If you expect meaningful income from defined-benefit pensions or Social Security, your actual required Coast FIRE number will likely be lower than our estimate.
- Taxes and Account Structures are not modeled: The calculator assumes all dollars are equivalent. It does not differentiate between taxable brokerage accounts, pre-tax Traditional 401(k)s (subject to income taxes upon withdrawal), or post-tax Roth IRAs (tax-free withdrawals).
- Healthcare & Insurance Costs: Transitioning to Coast FIRE often involves leaving full-time corporate employment. You must account for independent health insurance, premiums, and out-of-pocket maximums before stopping aggressive savings.
3. Safe Withdrawal Rates (SWR)
The standard 4% default is derived from historical studies (such as the 1998 Trinity Study and William Bengen's original research), which evaluated a 30-year retirement horizon. If you plan to retire early with a 40- to 50-year horizon, retirement researchers frequently recommend a lower safe withdrawal rate between 3.0% and 3.5% to mitigate portfolio exhaustion risk.
4. No Fiduciary Relationship
Use of this website, its calculator, or its educational articles does not establish a fiduciary, client, or advisory relationship. Financial planning should always be tailored to your unique household budget, risk tolerance, debt obligations, and family goals.
We strongly recommend reviewing your retirement roadmap with a licensed, fee-only Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) or CPA prior to making major career transitions or altering your 401(k) contribution strategy.
